Despite the boycott of some Palestinian factions, including the left-wing Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), and the absence of factions outside of the PLO, including Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other small organizations, the 23rd meeting of the Palestinian National Council is due to be held today at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah.

Official sources in the Council and a close associate of the presidency will discuss the work of the 23rd session of the Palestinian National Council, which will begin in the Ahmad Al-Shukairy Conference Hall in the Presidential Office in Ramallah, with the presence of Arab and international delegations and representatives of Palestinian factions.

The meeting of the Palestinian National Council will be held amid great controversy over the legality of the meeting, in light of the absence of the main Palestinian factions and figures.

Fatah movement confirmed the legality and necessity of the meeting despite the absence of the factions, saying it is necessary for tackling the current situation in Palestine, particularly regarding  the US decision to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on the Nakba day, which comes one day after the so called Israeli independence day.

The meeting will focus on ways and mechanisms to face the challenges of the coming stage and the endangers of attempts to liquidate the Palestinian cause.  In addition, the Executive Committee of the Organization and the Central Council will be elected by the end of the session.

To his part, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Fatah movement, Major General Jibril Rajoub, said that the outputs of the Palestinian National Council will respond to conspiracies and attempts to undermine the Palestinian cause, especially the so-called ‘deal of the century’ and Trump’s declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Rajoub said that the Council will respond to the “Deal of the Century” with a strategic vision in the political and organizational dimension in accordance with the resolutions of international legitimacy, and the Council will be a road map towards unity of the Palestinian people.
