Yarmouk (when you're born a refugee)

These were the people who'd open their doors to anyone
This was the mother who always cooked double in case anyone should drop by
Now she's mixing spice and water
As her children just get thinner
When you're born a refugee you build your life on nothing
just a little room then a little home, even a little shop
But they've burned it all down now
When you're born a refugee you're born knowing what survival means
You feed your daughter and keep her strong and sing her songs
But you can't look her in the face now

These were the people who opened their doors to the new refugees
Gave them their blankets and made up their beds in the mosques and the schools
And their reward came from the sky
When the army plane flew by
Now they're children are learning awful words no child should ever need to know
'What's a checkpoint? Why are we under siege?
And what is dehydration?'
Yarmouk, you're finally on the BBC
The bodies there for the world to see
That in 2014
You can still die of starvation
