Meanwhile, the son of the country's embattled President Hosni Mubarak, Gamal, is in Egypt and not in London as has been reported, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said.

"He (Gamal) is in Egypt, he is not in London as was rumoured," Mr Hague told the BBC today.

Mr Hague said he had spoken to Gamal Mubarak, who had been considered a likely successor to take over as Egypt's leader, and issued a stern warning against government-sponsored violence.

"I have spoken to ... Gamal on the telephone and said if it turns out that there was state-sponsored violence here, that would be catastrophic for Egypt and for those who are in government now," Mr Hague said.

Egyptian websites published unconfirmed reports last week that Gamal Mubarak had fled to London amid the wave of mass protests and unrest sweeping the country.
